Solar Home Energy Program, Government of Guyana
The Government of Guyana (GoG) launched several initiatives to improve energy services in the hinterland communities where nearly twenty per cent (20%) of the Guyanese population live. Solar Home Energy systems (SHE), established as a complementary solution to grid electrification, have proven to be the most viable off-grid electrification today. The Government of Guyana’s initiative Solar Home Energy program is to reach the remotest of areas of Hinterland by providing energy-poor communities access to clean technologies for basic and productive use.
SHE program received financing from the Government of India via a Line of Credit (LOC) for the supply and delivery of 30,000 SHE Systems. Each system is designed to power two (2) 9-watt LED Lamps and one (1) 12-watt Stand Fan and is equipped with a USB Port for charging portable electronic devices. Upon completion of the project, a total of 4.5 mega-watts will be installed across the Hinterland and riverine Communities of all ten (10) Administrative regions. The project is expected to benefit over 245 communities and 30,000 households and 136,863 persons.
Implementing the SHE program would realise economic and environmental benefits while simultaneously supporting the objectives of Guyana's LCDS 2030. Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) will be the nodal agency for executing the SHE program. The Energy and Resources Institution (TERI) is providing resources and technical support to GEA for effectively executing the SHE program as a project monitoring unit.
